Managing Your Arthritis With Better Weight Control

Dec 2nd, 2009 | By Body Pain Admin | Category: Arthritis Joint Pain

Arthritis is a painful disease which causes  severe pain within your joints. Sometimes, the amount of stiffness and pain is severe enough that the person is unable to do normal and regular activities each day.

One way to reduce or better control the severity of your arthritis symptoms is by making sure your weight is within normal range.

Being too heavy, or weighing too much, puts additional strain on the joints, and can lead to more pain.

Extra body weight adds pressure and can lead to additional inflammation on the joints and muscles. Arthritis makes the joints and muscles weak, extra weight exaggerates the problem of arthritis by further stressing the already inflamed weight bearing joints.

Why People Are Overweight:
1. The only way to become overweight is to eat more calories than you burn each day.
2. Not enough physical exercise- too much time spent watching television or at the computer
3. Genetics does play a role in weight management.
4. Physical limitations or injury reduce the likelihood of getting enough physical exercise.
5. Eating out of boredom or other emotions besides hunger.

Ways to reduce your weight:

The rate of weight loss should be safe and steady. It should be half to two pounds per week, but check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss program.
1. Food intake should be spaced throughout the day, and smaller meals are better.
2. Eat lower fat and lower calorie foods.
3. Don’t store food all around your house. Keep it to the kitchen.
4. Get regular physical exercise, under a physician’s care.

Weight loss and arthritis:

Healthy diet and exercise are the keys to weight control.  If you can maintain your ideal weight, you may be able to reduce the joint pain of arthritis. When you weigh less, there is less pressure on your joints and muscles, and your arthritis symptoms may improve as well.
