Pain Worsens Osteoarthritis
Dec 16th, 2009 | By Body Pain Admin | Category: OsteoarthritisA study published in 2008 in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism identified that pain is not just a result of osteoarthritis, but can actually be a trigger that makes existing osteoarthritis even worse.
In this study, researchers found that the pain signals arising from osteoarthritis traveled to the spinal cord and led to a biochemical cascade which actually worsened the osteoarthritis symptoms.
This is important because, until now, osteoarthritis was considered mainly to be related to degeneration and aging- it was seen as a natural byproduct of the aging process.
Using several biological animal models, researchers demonstrated that experiences of pain actually sensitized the pain pathways to the spinal cord, meaning that pain led to more feelings of pain, which led to more feelings of pain- and so on.
What this study highlights is that pain must be managed and controlled in order to prevent the disease from getting worse.
By managing your condition and seeking osteoarthritis pain relief, you may be able to stop the ever increasing pain that is usually associated with this condition.
