Are Back Pain And Neck Pain Related

In this age of instant communication, increasing stress, and life moving faster than ever, it’s easy to see how fast and hectic our lives are becoming. Each and every life event seems to happen at the speed of light (which, according to scientists, is the fastest attainable speed. Whether we look at modes of communication, information overload, the growth of the internet- everything is moving faster and faster. . Keeping up with such a fast paced technology, enormous stress and strain is employed on human anatomy causing immense physical, emotional, psychological and social fatigue. One outcome of this increased stress is the problem of Back and Neck Pain.

Back Pain causes
Back pain is a problem that can present itself anywhere along the spinal cord, which is a linear “stack” of 33 bones connected by ligaments, muscles and shock-absorbing disks. Back pain is categorized into several types of pain, including lower back pain, neck pain, acute and chronic back pain. Low back pain occurs in the area of the back that goes from just below the bottom of the ribs down to the tailbone. The pain can be caused by numerous factors such as bone spurs, a herniated disk or muscle spasms. Sometimes low back pain is accompanied sciatica, which is the medical terms for pain that travels down the leg or is going down the leg.

Neck Pain causes
Neck pain occurs in the area of the spine that starts from the base of the skull and moves down from the level of the shoulders along the spinal cord. It can be caused by tight muscles, posture problems or other issues. Sometimes people can even get neck pain from sleeping in a funny position the night before. Just as low back pain may cause sciatica, the more serious type of neck problems may cause pain down the arms. Degenerative disorders like osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis, poor posture, weak abdominal muscles, head injuries are additional causes of neck pain.

Common causes
Back and Neck Pain have variety of common causes including posture and poor body mechanics, heavy physical work, lifting or forceful movement, bending or twisting, a sudden fall, car crash, sports injury, obesity, age related changes causing thickening of ligaments, osteoarthritis, and bone softening.
Thus, the medical analysis of described above points out that Back pain and Neck Pain are indeed related to each other as they both occur around our spinal cord, and cause us ongoing discomfort.
