Treating Knee Pain

While there are several options for treating knee pain, the best options are those which break the cycle of inflammation that can cause further pain sensitivity, and to address any postural or structural weaknesses which created or maintain the knee pain.
The main pain relief choices that knee pain sufferers have are NSAIDs, Cortisone or Steroid Injections, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, MSM. The problem is that while each of these works on some element of the knee pain, no one choice resolves all the issues of knee pain.
When you are looking at knee pain relief options, you need to consider the following 5 factors:
- Does the treatment address joint pain?
- Does the treatment allow increased mobility?
- Does the treatment allow for joint repair?
- Does the treatment reduce or eliminate inflammation?
- Does the treatment work quickly?
When we look at NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), we see that these have well documented medical risks, including heart attack, stroke, bleeding ulcers, gastrointestinal upset, abdominal pain, and liver damage. In fact, more than 20,000 Americans die each year from using NSAIDs.
When we look at cortisone or steroid injections, the main problem with these is that they are a temporary solution. They relieve pain, they do not cure it. Plus they have to be administered by a physician, and can be expensive. Long term use of pain relief injections can lead to bone deterioration, cartilage, ligament, and tendon damage.
When we look at the supplements, such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM, we see that each of them works on part of the pain process, but none of them work equally well on all five factors.
When choosing a knee pain relief supplement, look for one that improves pain, improves mobility, aids in joint repair, reduces inflammation and acts quickly.
